HOW DOES THE NYCEEC efficienSEE™ CALCULATOR WORK?
The efficienSEE™ Calculator uses owner-generated reports submitted under New York City’s energy benchmarking regulation (Local Law 84 of 2009). Each building is grouped with comparable New York City buildings based on age and height–factors that the data has demonstrated are statistically relevant in more precisely determining the optimal energy use profile of a given building.
Each building’s energy and water performance is then compared to the top 10th and 20th percentile-performing building in its comparable group.
WHY WAS THE NYCEEC efficienSEE™ CALCULATOR CREATED AND HOW DOES IT BENEFIT ME?
In 2009, the City of New York passed the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan, a suite of initiatives to improve existing buildings’ efficiency and reduce NYC’s carbon footprint. As a result, the City has amassed a first-of-its-kind, large data set of building information under Local Law 84: Benchmarking (LL84) and Local Law 87: Audits & Retro-commissioning (LL87).
This provides New York City with the unique opportunity to help building owners and property managers improve their building performance, save money and reduce greenhouse gases. This data is publicly available to anyone, but the raw data doesn’t mean much to most people.
Under a partnership with the City of New York, NYCEEC has translated and analyzed this data through a simple algorithm, jointly developed with Steven Winters Associates, to generate useful, actionable information for building owners and property managers.
efficienSEE™ is meant to be a useful tool for building owners and property managers to get a quick look into their building’s utility cost savings for fuel and electricity usage, in addition to cogeneration potential.
WHO IS NYCEEC AND HOW DID YOU GET MY BUILDING INFORMATION?
We are a mission-driven lender that finances energy efficiency and clean energy projects in buildings.
Under an agreement with the City of New York for educational and outreach purposes to benefit the public, we receive the submitted reports under LL84. Most of this data is already publicly available, as part of LL84. We analyzed this data and reformatted it in a way to educate people about the benefits of energy and water efficiency and clean energy.
ARE THE RESULTS CUSTOMIZED FOR MY SPECIFIC BUILDING?
Yes! Each savings estimate is customized for a specific, real building depending on key attributes of that building, such as building vintage and building size. Results are based on owner-generated reports submitted under Local Law 84: Benchmarking. Roosevelt Landings prioritize their upgrades and save even more money.

WHEN WILL THE BUILDING INFORMATION BE UPDATED?
The current information is based on Local Law 84: Benchmarking data submitted in 2015. As the City of New York releases new public data, NYCEEC expects to continually update the information.
WHAT DOES MY PERCENTILE MEAN?
Your percentile is your relative ranking for projected cost savings within your comparison group of similar buildings, based on building age, building size, and affordability status. The higher the percentile, the more potential your building has – relative to its peers – to achieve utility cost savings.
